Dr. Mejia received her Doctorate and Educational Specialist degree at Nova Southeastern University and a Masters degree at Queens College in New York City. Dr. Mejia’s service to M-DCPS began as a classroom teacher at Miami Lakes-Opa Locka Elementary. She was also an ESOL teacher at Gratigny Elementary where she successfully opened the first self-contained ESOL class. As Assistant Principal for ESE at Biscayne Gardens Elementary, Dr. Mejia spearheaded “The Wind That Blew” illustration project. In this project students with disabilities worked with renowned author, Doug Cooney, to develop illustrations for a story dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. Prior to becoming Principal of Ojus, she served six years as Principal at Crestview Elementary. During her time at Crestview, she successfully elevated the school from a C to an A+ rating, and maintained that rating for four years. She was elected Norland Feeder Pattern Lead Principal by her colleagues, served as board member for Community Crusade Against Drugs, and mentor Principal for Region II. She has received many honors in her life including the Cervantes Outstanding Hispanic Educator Award by Nova Southeastern University. Her efforts have been showcased in Voyager Learning, Office of Parental Involvement and CEI magazines, highlighting her schools’ successes. Yet, despite the multitude and magnitude of her achievements, Dr. Mejia insists that the greatest honor has been the love and respect of her students, parents and colleagues.
