Until now, reading instruction focused primarily on developing decoding and word attack skills. Now students are reading for a different purpose, to gain a meaningful understanding of the text. Although we will continue to work on the mechanics of reading, especially vocabulary skills, students will also be exposed to a variety of text structures. They’ll use comprehension skills and strategies to understand, interpret, and evaluate text.
Now, more than ever, writing becomes more important in all of the subjects, even math. Students will express their thoughts and ideas through various forms of writing. Your child will be writing to inform as well as to express themselves in many ways. Fourth grade teachers will use best practices to help students develop their writing craft helping them prepare for Florida Writes. Fourth grade will prove to be a year of growth and change for our students as we prepare them for success in all endeavors.
