Chess Club

For the past four years Mr. Kirkman , a Fourth Grade teacher, has taught students chess at Ojus Elementary School . He has welcomed all grade levels to participate and learn the great thinking game of chess. Students have had the opportunity to participate in grade level and club tournaments and look forward to the competitions. When students finish their games, more often than not, you will see students sharing the moves they just used to win their game with their opponent. Besides being fun, research has shown that playing chess at a young age helps develop visualization, concentration, planning, and problem-solving skills. We look forward to another year of chess at Ojus and hope to get to local tournaments to meet the challenges of some of Miami Dade’s best chess players.

Music Club

The Music Club evolved as a result of Ms. Murawka’s work with motivated students after school on Wednesdays. These students showed an increased interest in the fine arts and Ms. Murawka was happy to promote the love of music in her students. Ojus students are learning to play instruments that may have otherwise been collecting dust at home. The club is working on guitar and keyboard skills. Ms. Murawka says she looks forward to the group "rockin'" very soon!

Art Club

The Ojus Art Club is a wonderful time for students to experience the thought and production of the art process. They do not follow a lesson, but have a terrific time playing with their creative ideas. Selected artworks are sent in for district-wide exhibitions and poster contests. If your child comes home with a photo of their artwork this means that the piece was sent to represent Ojus Elementary for an exhibit. Participating in art activities help children gain the essential tools for understanding human experience. Ms. Pat Cohen, art teacher at Ojus Elementary, has been nurturing the art in our students for the past two years.
